In various drilling operations, an aqueous medium with clays (BENTONITE) has traditionally been used, regardless of the mechanical system employed and the working environment.
However, new technical requirements and technological advances have led to the development and use of a range of additives to improve and optimize the drilling process.
The main improvements achieved through the use of these additives are:
• Facilitating and improving the extraction and lubrication of drilling cuttings (spoil), by modifying density and viscosity at high flow rates.
• Controlling internal and/or external borehole pressure (preventing collapses), through the adjustment of density and viscosity parameters, particularly due to their thixotropic behavior.
• Cooling of machinery, the borehole, and drilling residues.
• Borehole sealing and waterproofing, reducing filtration losses of drilling fluids by forming a protective layer on the borehole walls and effectively sealing them.
Depending on the additive used, key properties such as viscosity and density can be increased or reduced.
